Kate named Evan Pugh University Professor (4/16)
Kate was selected by the Penn State to be an Evan Pugh University Professor. Since 1960, only 68 professors have earned this distinction. According to the University, an Evan Pugh Professor"has displayed the courage to pioneer in his or her field, the discipline to remain at the forefront of research, and the generosity of spirit to share these accomplishments with students."  Kate is deeply  honored and so very grateful to all of our group members through the years-- THANK YOU!

Christine Doman completes her MS (7/15) and heads to Utah
Congratulations to Christine for successfully completing her MS thesis, "Stable Isotope and Lipid Signatures of Plants Across a Climate Gradient."  Christine studied grasses across a the Kohala Peninsula, Hawaii, and found some rather surprising things about C4 vegetation.  Christine has recently accepted a position with Friends of Alta Land Trust.  We wish her every success!
Angela Chung completes her MS (12/14)
Congratulations to Angela who successfully completed and defended her MS thesis,  "Evaluation of Variability in Soil Organic Carbon Isotope Record and Implications for Organic Matter Preservation." Angela refined methods for isotopic analyses of small amounts of carbon in ancient soils, and suggested excessive respiratory carbon loss may have caused the PETM isotope excursion in soil carbon to be smaller than in other reservoirs.

Allie Baczinski joins our group (6/14)
Allie recently completed her Ph.D. dissertation at Northwestern University, and joins the team at PSU to work on our Pico-CSIA project.  She comes with a lot of experience in field geology, organic geochemistry and molecular isotope analyses. Welcome Allie!

Clay Magill finds early humans lived with variety (12/12)

Clay Magill has documented precession-paced swings between grasslands and forest and between dry and wet climates two million years ago at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.  Such sizable climate and resource variability during the rise of early humans likely influenced their cognitive development.  Clay has two papers in press with Proc. Nat. Acad. Sci. Link below to the articles and recent press about this work:
